The work of composer and clarinetist James Falzone exists at the intersection of divergent streams. Equally at home in classical, jazz, improvised, and various world music idioms, his career has garnered wide critical and peer respect for the way he traverses and connects these seemingly disparate paths. Perhaps the best description of this musical sojourn was given by critic Matthew Lurie in Time Out Chicago: "The only way to sum up the style of Chicago clarinetist and composer James Falzone is to say that it can’t be done. Falzone is an inveterate genre- crosser, and though he squawks and swoops with some of the city’s best free improvisers, it’s his fluency in classical and ethnic European cultures that set him apart . . . an already important Chicago voice."
James has been featured on numerous public radio and television programs and has performed in concert halls, festivals and jazz clubs throughout North America and Europe with the ensembles he directs, Allos Musica and KLANG, and with an eclectic mix of visionary artists from across the musical spectrum. He is a founding member of Jorrit Dijkstra’s Flatlands Collective and of the highly acclaimed French music ensemble Le Bon Vent, featured in 2005 at the Maison de la Culture in Montreal which broadcasted the ensemble’s live performance on Canadian Public Radio, one of only a handful of ensembles to have this honor in recent years.
In addition to appearing on numerous recordings as a guest artist, James has released several critically acclaimed recordings as leader including The Already and the Not Yet in 2000, The Sign and the Thing Signified in 2007, and KLANG: Tea Music in 2009, all on his own Allos Documents label. Additional significant recordings include Goodnight Marc Chagall (Epact) with Le Bon Vent, Mattjes (Clean Feed) with The Flatlands Collective, and Just Like This (Delmark) with Keefe Jackson’s Project Project.
A composer in many genres, James’ music has been performed widely by chamber and choral ensembles, orchestras and soloists. His 2006 composition, Beri’ah, commissioned by the Tapestry vocal ensemble, was premiered at the University of Denver and performed subsequently in Moscow, Latvia, The Kennedy Center, and the Frick Museum. He is also the composer and librettist of The Song of Roland, a one-act children’s opera commissioned by the Evanston Illinois Community Foundation and premiered in 2008. His most recent composition for orchestra and treble choir, who, if not ?, a meditation on environmentalism, was commissioned by the DuPage Symphony Orchestra and will be premiered in 2010. James has received numerous grants and awards including those from ASCAP, The Chicago Cultural Center, The Hillary Swing Fund for Creativity and The Rotary Foundation. Since 2002, has held the position of Director of Music and Resident Composer at Grace Chicago Church where he composes new liturgical works and directs The Grace Consort, the church’s ensemble-in-residence.
Educated at Northern Illinois University and New England Conservatory, James is a respected educator himself, currently on faculty at Columbia College Chicago where he teaches in the New Millennium Studies program, an innovative first-year interdisciplinary seminar. He is a frequent lecturer and workshop presenter at universities and colleges in the US and abroad on issues ranging from clarinet technique to improvisation to new paths in liturgical music. In 2005, James was a visiting scholar at the U.S. Naval War College in Newport Rhode Island where he assisted the Navy’s Strategic Studies Group in thinking through how musical improvisation might shed light on the ever-changing war on terrorism.
